Natural Dyeing day - Testimonial

http://www.knitnaks.co.uk/newsevents/news-entrys/testimonial.html

Thanks go to the 'Spinstar' blogger for her review of my Natural Dyeing day back in the Summer.
"I spent a lovely day this week learning about dyeing using plants, flowers – and anything else that came to hand, to be honest!
The course took place at the Weald and Downland Museum, which I seem to write about fairly regularly. The tutor was Caroline, who has her own website Knitnaks where she sells her handcrafted items, some of which she brought with her......
...... We were constantly surprised and possibly a little over-excited by the end results,
By the end of the day we had all built up quite a range of colours – I used some mohair that I had spun which seemed to take the colour quite well"

Check out the Spinstar blog for more images and a video of part of the dyeing process! http://spinstarcreations.wordpress.com/2011/07/29/natural-dyeing/
Looking forward to running the course again next year! Contact the Weald and Downland Museum, West Sussex to book your place soon!

Summer's chance meetings

http://www.knitnaks.co.uk/newsevents/news-entrys/summer-and-chance-meetings.html

This summer has brought about some interesting chance meetings.
When approached by a variety of people who wanted to learn more about the skills I use within my cottage industry... workshops started to take place!
The first was learning how to spin, which took place in the comfort of my home. My student had several of her own sheep and wanted to spin their wool, so we spent an afternoon surrounded by wool and spinning wheels, stopping only for homemade cake and tea.
For the next workshop the theme was knitting, and was held at the Weald and Downland Museum in W.Sussex. The students brought their own wool and needles and with the aid of my cup cake knitting pattern learnt a variety of different knitting techniques whilst going home with their own completed calorie free knitted cup cake!
Next was the Natural Dying Day again at the museum. Ten students joined me, and we had a wonderful day experimenting with different plants, including those from the kitchen cupboard. We also enjoyed a tour of the museum garden and learnt a lot about the dying qualities of those individual plants. We managed ten different colours during the day, and everyone went home with their samples.
But it did not stop there! I had a phone call from a lady who owned a small alpaca herd. She was finding it difficult to get a small amount of her fleece spun, so she commissioned me to spin her one hundred grams, she was thrilled!
Previously I have taken on commissions, examples being: a child’s pair of spotty socks in white and ballet pink, a long pair of stripy wrist warmers, a pair of adult slippers.
If you have any requests or would like to have a go yourself, please do contact me for more details and a date could be arranged.

Countryfile, Sunday 13th February

http://www.knitnaks.co.uk/newsevents/news-entrys/country-file-13-feb.html

Watching Country File on the BBC last Sunday, I was thrilled to see Adam at last having his beautifully hand crafted suit fitted. I sat up in awe of what I was witnessing as the tailor from Savil Row was taken to the very rustic, atmospheric fitting room, a stark contrast to what he would normally be accustomed to.
The suit looked wonderful, and to think the colour was purely natural and produced from his own sheep was truly a special moment for him as it was for us, as we watched the story unfold. From fleece to finished product, he was very proud and proved it could be done to the delight of all sheep farmers who are trying so hard to raise the profil of wool and get some recognition for their own fleeces.
I am also proud to play a small part in this big picture, as I also work from fleece to finished product and will continue to promote British wool as I demonstrate the art of spinning and then offer the finished product to you for sale.
All I can add now is, buy British Wool and show your support for our wool industry!

Behind the scenes with Knitnaks!

http://www.knitnaks.co.uk/newsevents/news-entrys/behind-the-scenes-with-knitnaks.html

There has been a hive of activity in my house this holiday time. Apart from seeing friends and family this Christmas, I took the opportunity, especially as I found myself rather snowed in, to pull out my assortment of fleeces to give my spinning wheel a service and to dust off the dye pot. I have had such fun! Summer and autumn suddenly found their way back into my kitchen in spite of the freezing temperatures outside.
A smile came to my face as I delved into the depths of my deep freeze for the hidden ingredients I needed for Knitnaks next seasons’ new colours. I pulled out the Marigolds and Elderberries which I had carefully gathered and preserved only a few months before and gently placed them into their respective pans in order to create the dyes I would need for those new and exciting colours. Now that all was ready, I could begin………
I chose Shetland fleece and my wheel started to turn, a gentle hum was all that could be heard, the bobbin soon filled, it was ready to ply and then be made into a skein ready for washing in warm soapy water. With the dye bath now ready, the dripping skeins were gently lowered into the colour, which soon started to soak into the woolly mass. By now the kitchen was filled with a simmering, steaming, strange yet pleasant aroma of organic matter, which was left on a gentle heat for several hours………
Then I was able to relax, ‘time for tea’ I thought, and as I sat back in the warmth and comfort of my home, the snow was still falling…….
At last, time to have a look and as I lifted the lid there inside an amazing change had taken place. I was delighted as I saw the colours emerge. I carefully lifted the skeins from their steaming bath. ‘Perfect’, I thought and I started to imagine the beautiful blends and combinations of colours that I could now use.
You can now find new styles and products on the Knitnaks site ready for 2011 (there are more to follow, so keep on watching), do check them out…. and tell your friends!

Why Buy Wool?

http://www.knitnaks.co.uk/newsevents/news-entrys/why-buy-wool.html

With the first ever National Wool Week (11th-17th October) in mind Knitnaks would like to acknowledge its support for fleece to finished product using that wonderful fibre, British wool. The campaign for wool is an initiative from HRH Prince of Wales that aims to revitalise the British wool industry, as this great natural material is facing an uncertain future.
Knitnaks is proud to claim that it is one of a growing number of cottage industries and can honestly say that work is from fleece to finished product. This includes the use of a spinning wheel and lots of hand knitting! Whilst enjoying the variety of natural colours and textures that British breeds of sheep offer us, we also enjoy using plant dyes to create some wild and evocative hues which would suit the modern look and compliment the rustic. By us changing our habits and buying this home-grown fibre, we can change the industries decline and can make a difference.
By purchasing from us you are giving your support for, and showing your belief in the fibre of Britain, and at the same time helping to secure the livelihoods of Britains’ remaining hill farmers. The result is a glorious array of products to choose from, each will bring a feeling of quality and craftsmanship to your home, and we look forward to receiving your order!
Knitnaks would also like to say to all who have purchased from us... Thank you!

Craft Fair in Surbiton

http://www.knitnaks.co.uk/newsevents/news-entrys/craft-fair-in-surbiton.html

On Friday I spent a very enjoyable evening at a Craft Fair in Surbiton. Elizabeth Taylor the event organiser (who introduced herself to me at the Craft Fair in Midhurst) had planned a variety of exhibitors, which meant that people had the opportunity for a leisurely evening, shopping.
This included handmade crafts and unique gifts, also a makeup artist, reflexologist and Indian head massage. I enjoyed chatting with everyone and look forward to the next one!

Fernhurst Furnace Open Day 2010

http://www.knitnaks.co.uk/newsevents/news-entrys/fernhurst-furnace-open-day-2010.html

What a lovely day I had on Sunday, spinning all day, sitting in the autumn sunshine whilst talking to such interesting folk and as I told several people, not feeling guilty. The show its self had a lovely atmosphere and was very relaxed with people enjoying the different demonstrations on offer, or sitting back with their picnics or spit roasted lamb and pear or apple cider.
Every now and again peace would also be shattered as a battle would resume whilst the crowd cheered and the muskets fired (which if you weren't prepared for certainly made you jump and at the same time laugh whilst you gathered yourself together again!) I am already looking forward to next year and would like to say a big thankyou to the organisers.

http://www.knitnaks.co.uk/newsevents/news-entrys/rare-breeds-show-2010.html

What a wonderful day! It was very rural with all the animals and the weather was perfect too. It was a pleasure to chat to so many interesting people and to exchange ideas and news, and to also come home with the most beautiful Shetland fleece for me to spin.
The true highlight for me was when I realised that I had been awarded the 'Handspun Special Award' along with second prize for one of my piggies in the handspun competition tent. I was delighted, especially when I was told that the award went to the item the judge most wanted to take home. I am sure I saw my piggie smiling as he stood proudly wearing the orange and blue rosettes, of course I was very proud too!
